Safe Removal of Asbestos Services
Hiring an expert for the safe removal of asbestos is the best option. There are legal obligations you have as a duty holder and liabilities you must face if you do not handle asbestos correctly. In November 2006 the ‘Control of Asbestos Regulations’ was put into effect by the British Government’s Health & Safety Executive. These regulations and any current updates are mandatory for contractors and duty holder’s alike.
In safe practices it is always assumed that asbestos is present unless proven otherwise. Therefore, it is necessary to have a licensed contractor come to perform a survey of the premises. The survey may or may not also include taking samples. The samples are sent out for appropriate testing at a registered testing facility.
The survey report should include the identification of any asbestos, a risk assessment for any samples taken, a method statement and a plan and removal strategy if necessary. You should also be informed along the way of any costs to you.
The contractor will plan with you for the safe removal of any asbestos that poses a danger or where there is risk of harm to those exposed. The safe removal of asbestos is a process that must be followed in order to prevent any disturbance that would release harmful fibres into the air. All areas should be covered and protected with heavy and durable plastic. All airways and vents should be covered. The contractors should be wearing protective, disposable gear and respirators. No one else should be present in the building.
The asbestos will be removed with as little fibre release as possible. This means that unnecessary drilling, sanding, sawing or pounding will not be tolerated or allowed. The contractor should also be using water to wet the area and the asbestos to prevent airborne fibres. The asbestos should be removed as whole as possible. Any asbestos containing materials should immediately be placed inside double polythene bags and sealed completely.
Asbestos should be transported in a registered hazardous waste vehicle and taken only to ‘special waste’ dump sites that accept hazardous materials. Any rags used in clean up; any protective material worn or used for the work area should be disposed in this manner also for the safe removal of asbestos.
