Removing Asbestos
Removing asbestos has become a vital mission since it was discovered that exposure creates fatal illness to those that breathe it in. This is because asbestos contains fibres that are invisible to the naked eye. These fibres are knife-like and embed themselves into the lungs of unknowing victims.
Where is Asbestos?
Up until 1999 asbestos was a primary material in building supplies and products because it was so durable, cost effective and flame resistant. That means you could find asbestos anywhere, except newer building constructions.
Asbestos could be found most commonly in floor and ceiling tiles, insulation, fire doors, gaskets, fuses, resin, flue pipes, paint and a host of other products and materials. Asbestos was also commonly used as a mixture in cement. This cement was used as foundation, cement roof sheets, siding and many other places.
Should Asbestos be Removed?
If it is assumed or determined that asbestos is present in the home or workplace it is best to contact an asbestos removal contractor who is licensed through the Health & Safety Executive. Most asbestos is difficult to recognize by a non-professional and most of the time needs to be tested.
The process will include a licensed contractor coming to the home or workplace that is in question. A survey will take place. If it looks like asbestos might be an issue, the contractor will take several samples from different areas. This is a complex service that requires protective gear and clearing of the areas that samples are drawn from.
The samples need to be wrapped in double polythene bags and labeled. The samples need to be transported in a registered waste carrier which has segregated compartments and can be locked. They are taken to an approved asbestos testing lab. If the results are positive for asbestos, it will almost always have to be removed.
How is Asbestos Removed?
In some instances, if no disturbance to the asbestos is likely to occur, the contractor will leave it in place. Otherwise, it depends on where the asbestos is located and how extensive the risk is.
The area will have to be clear of anyone other than the removal specialists and warning tape will be displayed. The experts will don disposable coveralls and appropriate respiratory protective equipment. All other surfaces will need to be protected with heavy polythene plastic.
If the contaminated material is large, for instance asbestos cement siding or sheeting, then it will need to be removed with as little disturbance as possible. This usually means large pieces, dampened first. There are many strict guidelines which need to be adhered to, which is why the licensed contractors should be left to do the job.
For small materials and products it is much the same process, with the material being put into double bags and labeled. The contractor will also clean and sanitize the area when they are done working. Any fibres that are let loose will be wiped with wet cloths and removed.
Although this is a simplified version of what may happen, the key to remember is that it is always best to contact an expert when removing asbestos.
