Working with asbestos cement?

Controlled Procedures Must Be Used When Conducting Asbestos Cement Removal

Asbestos cement is a mix of cement and asbestos (usually about 10-15% of the total product) forming a hard material often used as corrugated roofing sheets on sheds, garages and farms. It was also used to make drainpipes, flues, water tanks and many other products.

Asbestos cement usually contained white asbestos (chrysotile) but older types may contain blue (crocidolite) or brown (amosite). The type used is not really important as all asbestos is hazardous, although asbestos cement does not release many fibres and is relatively low risk.

Please take the asbestos hazard seriosley and remember that the irreversible effects of asbestos exposure can take between 15 and 60 years to develop.
Asbestos use declined steadily from the 1970s but white asbestos (chrysotile) could still be used until November 1999, and suprisingly can be found in some relatively new buildings.

Do asbestos cement products have to be removed?

No is the answer, asbestos cement products are very durable and are likely to last for many years.

Business owners have a legal duty to manage any asbestos in their premises and this would include monitoring the condition of asbestos cement. A cement product may need to be removed if it is in very poor condition and breaking up or needs uneconomical repair.

Householders do not have the same duties, although they are required to follow the procedurers for safe disposal.

My asbestos cement roof is covered in leaves, moss and grass. Will this cause a problem?

This frequently happens to asbestos cement, and can eventually cause it to become brittle and break. It is a good method to keep the roof clear but care must be taken to do it in a way that doesn't damage the surface and release asbestos fibres.

The only way that we recomend is to apply commercialy available biocide, then when it has had time to act, apply water mixed with fibre suppressant with hand held sprayers and gently remove the moss from the roof. You should never attempt to brush the moss off dry or use a wire brush.

Is it possible to remove the asbestos cement myself?

The answer is Yes you can remove asbestos cement but only if the product has been identified as containing chrysotile asbestos fibre type, you will also need to follow very strict guidlines at all times and will need to contact a registered waste carrier who can dispose of the material.

Please remember that this advice only applies to asbestos cement. Other asbestos materials are more dangerous and you should not attempt to remove or disturb them without sourcing a licensed asbestos removal contractor.
